Drawing the predictable melange of charity shop jumpers and Doc Martens, Bombay Bicycle Club took centre stage at the Great Hall playing a sold out set in the halfway leg of their UK tour. Swept there on a compelling tide of nostalgia and elated on expectations of £23 tickets, that were needless to say; high.
The band have received heady mainstream success from album number four ‘So Long, See You Tomorrow’ with singles such as ‘Luna’ gracing the airwaves of the daytime Radio One playlist.
The set was a notch up in professionalism from the 2010 post ‘had the blues’ relative...
Frontman Jack Steadman, guitarist Jamie MacColl (grandson of folk legend Ewan, nephew of the late Kirsty), bassist Ed Nash and drummer Suren de Saram formed the band at school in north London in 2006. They won a competition to play at that year’s V festival, released two EPs the next year and wrote their debut album, I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose, while still at school. It came out in 2009 and went gold.
This is where most new bands would take a year or so to regroup and plot their next move. Instead, Bombay Bicycle Club took a left-turn with 2010’s folk-influenced Flaws,...

Drawing on personal rather than political themes, Tooth & Nail was recorded over a whirlwind five-day session with Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry (whose impeccable production credits include Solomon Burke, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello and Hugh Laurie) in his South Pasadena basement studio.
With Joe taking Billy out of his comfort zone (all vocals were recorded live without retakes or...

Bizet: L'Arlesienne Suite No.2 Rachmaninov: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Dvorak: Symphony No.9 "From the New World"
Performers:
Conductor: Carlo Rizzi Soloist: Alexander Gavrylyuk (Piano)
The second suite is a charming collection comprising six pieces from those that Bizet composed for Daudet’s play The Girl from Arles – a tragic story about unrequited love in which the title character never appears.
Paganini’s theme is ripe for development and Rachmaninov fully exploits this in a freely imaginative and rhythmically energetic sequence...

This show will also be the first for SW1 in The Great Hall in Exeter...
World-famous violinist, Nigel Kennedy, presents a typically maverick musical programme celebrating the music of Bach and Fats Waller.
The concert begins with Bach sonatas and partitas for solo violin, after which he is joined by an acoustic guitarist, a snare drum and a double bass to perform Kennedy's own arrangements of the music of the legendary Fats Waller as well as classical cross over pieces.
A hugely entertaining and enjoyable evening where skill and passion come together for an electrifying evening of music.
Elgar : Introduction & Allegro Beethoven : Piano Concerto No.3 Elgar : Enigma Variations
Performers:
Conductor : Owain Arwel Hughes Soloist: Leon McCawley (Piano)
Bristling with energy the Introduction & Allegro is an intricately wrought concerto grosso for strings. Abandoning the expansive lyric nature of the Enigma Variations, the work that first brought him to public attention, or the imperial swagger of his marches, Elgar instead took the opportunity to explore a modern approach in a complex and densely packed masterpiece which still...
Born out of the ashes of the UK post-punk scene, The Cult evolved to become one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the late 20th century, selling millions of albums, headlining venues worldwide, infusing innovative possibilities into the worlds of music, art and fashion and quickly ascending through the ranks of the indie music world to achieve global status.
In 1987, The Cult released “Electric”, an album of stylistic change that aimed the band straight at the heart of the rock market. Recorded in New York City at the legendary Electric Ladyland studios and...
