Libraries inspiring creativity with new season of events

A new season of events from workshops to discos, theatre to films, storytelling to markets, is coming to libraries across Devon and Torbay from August to October this year.

The Get Creating season encourages communities throughout the county to get in touch with their creative side, whether participating in activities or watching performances, there is something for everyone, even if they wouldn’t describe themselves as creative. Most are offered free or at a very low cost.

Exeter dementia campaigner’s book features in national collection

Dementia campaigner and author Gina Awad has been selected as one of just twenty UK authors to appear in a new, specialist literary collection.

Gina, the leading light behind Exeter Dementia Action Alliance, published her first book called United in 2022 with the popular and much loved cartoonist, the late Tony Husband.

It not only tackled the serious issue of dementia and its impact on families in a humorous and approachable way but also helped people to navigate their way through what is often a journey fraught with complications.

New drive to create bespoke community libraries

A major drive to establish a wide network of community libraries in Devon's rural areas is to be launched by the county council.

The community libraries will be developed as an alternative to the current mobile library service which is faced with falling numbers of users and rising costs.

Members of Devon's Cabinet today agreed to decommission the ageing mobile library vehicles and set aside cash to help community groups and parish councils set up new community libraries.

Families looking for Halloween fun this October half term can try their hand at pumpkin carving - and eating – at a series of five family events across Devon.

Once you’ve carved your pumpkin, learn how to use the seeds and flesh to make a delicious soup and muffins, and take home a free recipe book by Hubbub .

The sessions will be led by two specialist session leaders, including The Crafty Cook CIC , who deliver cookery and nutrition courses in Devon.

Libraries across Devon and Torbay are calling for children to sign up to the Silly Squad Summer Challenge and read six books this summer as part of the 2020 Summer Reading Challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge will run from Saturday 4th July to Saturday 5th September. Due to Covid-19 our library buildings have been closed since the 23rd March 2020 and our mobile library and home library service have been suspended. It has been an extraordinary time and we have rapidly adjusted to the situation.

Staff to provide services differently as libraries close due to coronavirus

Libraries Unlimited has announced that libraries across Devon will temporarily close from Friday 20 March, in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Across the county, library staff are trying to continue to provide library services in different ways.

In Exeter, they are trialling ‘books by post’. Others will be providing online sessions such as Bounce & Rhyme, reading groups, and story times. There will be IT help, provided remotely.

This Easter, Libraries Unlimited invites young people to help in the search for a missing Devon librarian.

Exeter, St Thomas and Topsham libraries are looking for people aged 12 and over (or younger, if accompanied by an adult) to help solve the mystery of The Lost Librarian , as part of a fun and interactive puzzle trail installed by Libraries Unlimited, thanks to funding from Arts Council England.

New approaches and models for generating increased value for libraries and local communities have today been revealed by the University of Exeter Business School in conjunction with Libraries Unlimited.

It is hoped that this unique understanding of the relationship between social and financial value, published in a new research report titled Unlimited Value, will help libraries and the wider cultural sector to consider innovative and enterprising methods of service delivery at a time when budgets are under pressure.

Libraries use the ‘Force’ to get communities active this January

Those looking for new ways to get active this January can do so at their local library. During the month [of January], 54 libraries across Devon will be hosting events and activities designed to get people of all ages exercising their mind, body and soul.

Libraries Unlimited, the charity that runs Devon and Torbay libraries will launch its sixth annual Active Life Active Mind programme on January 3rd 2019. The month long programme sees over 250 events taking place across the county, including Star Wars Yoga and Saber Combat Jedi School.
