The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E) has extended the suspension of birth services at Honiton and Okehampton maternity units until mid-September 2018.

The Trust took the decision last year to temporarily suspend births and subsequent in-patient stays at Okehampton and Honiton maternity units. This step was taken to maintain patient safety due to a combination of factors affecting the stability of the services at these sites and the other units it operates in Tiverton and Exeter.

Zita Martinez, Head of Midwifery at the RD&E, said: “We are sorry for...

The RD&E is to extend the temporary suspension of birth services at Honiton and Okehampton birth centres for a further three months.

Good progress has been made to recruit staff into vacancies within the wider Maternity Service, but ongoing staff sickness and high patient demand in the acute unit in Exeter means we have not yet been able to reach acceptable staffing levels. As a result, the Trust is continuing to suspend birth services at Honiton and Okehampton to ensure patient safety and quality is maintained across our maternity service

The extension means that women...

A family from Exeter have donated a Cuddle Cot to the Labour Ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in memory of their son Louie.

The cot enables bereaved parents to spend more time with their babies if they are stillborn or pass away shortly after birth. The cooling cot can be wrapped around a baby allowing parents to stay with them for longer and giving other family members a chance to say goodbye.

Emma Bolt and Ace High decided to start fundraising for a new Cuddle Cot for the RD&E’s Labour Ward after they used one with their son Louie, who sadly passed away on...

Exeter Sands donate 'cuddle cot' to RD&E Maternity Unit

Exeter Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, has donated a ‘cuddle cot’ and two Moses baskets to the Maternity Unit at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital to enable bereaved parents to spend more time with their babies. The cuddle cot is a cold pad that can be wrapped around a baby that has been stillborn, allowing parents to stay with them for longer. This gives parents time to grieve and start to come to terms with their loss, as well as enabling other family members time to meet the baby and say goodbye. Sands operate throughout the UK, supporting people affected by the...
