Challenging sewer repair completed successfully

Work to repair a collapsed sewer close to a buried medieval bridge in Exeter has finished today (Friday 8 February 2013).

A section of the 300mm pipe beneath Holloway Street collapsed in January but the repair was complicated by its proximity to the Larkbeare Bridge, a scheduled ancient monument, which lies 2.4 metres beneath the road.

South West Water and its contractors May Gurney worked closely with Devon County Council, which maintains the bridge, and English Heritage, which fast-tracked the required permissions so work could start straight away.

Safety risk means cliff fall road will not re-open

An East Devon coastal road closed by a cliff fall during heavy rainfall in the Summer will not re-open, Devon County Council has confirmed.

Old Beer Road in Seaton has been closed since 12 July after a 25 metre section of the road fell away by around three metres.

A geotechnical report was carried out earlier this year by Devon based experts Frederick Sherrell Ltd. Its findings suggest that the collapse was triggered by the prolonged rainfall, saturating the weathered mudstone and leading to a “block” failure. It also advises that further slippage is...
