Climate change to be cut from new Geography curriculum

The Guardian newspaper reports today (Tuesday 19 March) that the new draft guidelines for the Geography national curriculum for children under 14 years old does not mention ‘debate about climate change’. If this happens, it will be left to teachers to choose whether to teach it, apart from a single mention of the human part in CO2 emissions in the chemistry section. With the pressure of time, or personal opinion, many may not do so.

Double celebration for rapidly improving Devon primary

Staff and pupils at a Newton Abbot primary are beginning the New Year with a double celebration after education inspectors judged that every aspect of school life was good or better.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary was judged satisfactory by education inspectors in 2009. But now every aspect of life at the 120-pupil school is good or better. That improvement has come at a time when school inspectors have been getting tougher with their judgements and they say St Joseph’s is set to get even better.

Devon’s Humanists have warned schools and parents of the American evangelical group behind the Samaritan’s Purse shoe-box initiative.

Humanist Chair Keith Denby said: “As we near Christmas children have been bringing home shoe-boxes to fill with toys and presents for children in need in Africa and Eastern Europe as part of the initiative 'Operation Christmas Child'."

Students from schools in the South West will become real-life engineers for a day when they research, design and build solutions to real engineering problems.

First year celebration for Devon academy trust

Every teacher from 14 primary schools across Devon got together to celebrate the successful first year of the biggest primary academy trust in the country.

The Primary Academies Trust educates 2,300 pupils across Devon with 120 teaching staff and 280 support staff.

Business leaders hail £8.5m technology centre

Business leaders have hailed the new £8.5 million Exeter College Technology Centre as yet another example of how the city is moving forwards.

Derek Phillips, vice-chairman of the Exeter Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: “This college facility is a great asset for the city and should make science and engineering more popular with students, which is great. It’s what we need for the future and it’s a very good development.

Schools invited to apply for enterprise grant

Schools have the chance to receive a share of Devon County Council’s latest round of Enterprise in Schools Grant funding.

State funded primary schools and special schools in the Devon County Council area are being invited to apply for the funding which aims to support new education projects that encourage enterprise and innovation for pupils and staff. Projects should also establish connections with the local business community.

Exeter-based Scomis achieves new accreditation to deliver ICT support

Exeter-based Scomis, providers of ICT services and training to the education sector, has successfully achieved Capita Accreditation for a further two years, enabling them to continue providing and supporting Capita software to approximately 550 schools and colleges across the South West.

Scomis is a service unit of Devon County Council.

Devon Contractors get to work for Chulmleigh School

Devon Contractors, which is based in Clyst St Mary, celebrates work beginning on a new £1.8 million build for Chulmleigh Community College. The project will be a fantastic addition to the facilities at Chulmleigh both for the students and the wider community.
