Tour of Britain postponed until September 2021

The organisers of the Tour of Britain have announced that this year’s race has been postponed.

Devon County Council had been due to host Stage Two of this year’s race in September with a route that was planned to start in Sherford and finish in Exeter.

However, the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic has prompted Sweetspot Group, which runs the Tour, to confirm that the event will now be re-scheduled to September 2021.

The Tour had consulted with British Cycling, sponsors and partners of the race to help reach its decision. All agreed that the pandemic...

Tour of Britain to return to Devon in 2020

The Tour of Britain will return to Devon next year, it has been announced today (Tuesday 5 November). Devon County Council and Tour organisers SweetSpot have confirmed that Devon will host Stage Two of the UK’s premier cycle race on Monday 7 September 2020. This year’s ‘thrilling’ Devon Stage of the Tour of Britain was one by Commonwealth Games time trial champion Cameron Meyer.

Meyer took victory in Stage Two of the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain after sprinting to win in Barnstaple.

Exeter’s rising cycling star George Pym says that racing in the Tour of Britain through his home county next week will be one of the highlights of his professional career so far.

George Pym, 24, will be riding in the Tour of Britain from Sunday 2 September – Devon Stage 2, takes place on the following day on Monday 3 September.

Residents, commuters and visitors to Barnstaple on Monday September 3 are advised to leave more time for their journey as the Tour of Britain returns to the town.

Starting in Cranbrook, East Devon, the race covers 174km (108miles) of Devon countryside before finishing in Barnstaple town centre - and large numbers of spectators are expected to visit on race day.

In 2012, when Barnstaple held the stage start, more than 220,000 spectators watched the Devon Stage live.

Cranbrook gears up for Tour of Britain

Young people across Cranbrook have brought new meaning to the term ‘recycling’ by creating an eye-catching and colourful town-wide public art display from old bikes.

In all 14 bikes have been painted, decorated and placed around the town – and now visitors are being challenged to find them all. The bikes have been decorated by members of the Cranbrook Youth Group, Youth Genesis and students from Cranbrook Education Campus and St Martins Primary School, with each bike painted in the colours of one of the competing teams. World class cyclists will race through the South Molton Pannier Market in September – the first time in the history of the modern Tour of Britain that it is has been routed through a building.

More than 250,000 people lined the county’s streets and roads to watch the Devon Stage of the Tour of Britain last September according to an independent report.
