Housebuilder marks National Tree Week in Exeter

Barratt Homes in Exeter has celebrated National Tree Week with the planting of an oak tree to mark 7,300 trees planted by the division in the last 12 months.

“We have planted or retained more than 7,300 trees or shrubs at our developments throughout the south west and wanted to mark our ongoing commitment to the environment,’’ said managing director Paul Moran. “National Tree Week is a great reminder to everyone about the value of trees and at Barratt we take great care of the local environment.”

Trees near Exeter rail line to be felled

Vital work needs to be carried out on trees overhanging the railway line at Flowerpot Fields, the City Council has been told.

Network Rail approached the City Council, as trains were clipping the ends of some overhanging branches and the foliage was also causing sight problems for the drivers.

Work, involving the pollarding, crown removal and some felling of the trees to the rear of the car park off Flowerpot Lane will be carried out over a two-week period in September. The car park will need to be partially closed while the work is carried out.

Now in its 13th year, the Crediton Parish Church Christmas Tree Festival has become an annual highlight for many in the lead-up to Christmas.

Our Christmas Tree Festival this year will take place from Thursday 3 December – Sunday 6 December. Opening hours will be 11am – 6pm (Thurs & Fri). 10.30am – 7pm (Sat) and 2 – 5pm (Sun). Technology pin-points trees in Exeter

Space age technology is being used to help pin-point trees in Exeter as part of a ground-breaking pilot scheme.

As part of the Space for Smarter Government Programme first call for Expression of Interest, Exeter City Council has secured £38,000 of funding from the UK Space Agency to help develop a tree management system that will allow officers to report the exact location and details of fallen or damaged trees in the city.

The system uses satellite positioning, navigation and timing technology, which is able to pick up natural objects such as trees.

Knit yourself a merry little Christmas at Arlington Court

A colourful giant knitted Christmas tree has graced the main staircase hall of Arlington Court in Devon.

Complete with Knitted baubles & presents it was originally knitted in 2005 to raise money for charity, the tree contains the work of over 1000 volunteers from across the world who helped to knit it. The tree has been on display in various other locations, but this is the first time it has been displayed in a historic house. On Sunday 24 November, A la Ronde, near Exmouth, launches its third annual community Christmas Tree Festival.

Local organisations are invited to bring a decorated tree to be displayed in the grounds until 15 December.

The idea is to raise awareness of your organisation in the local area and to convey key messages about what you do to other participants and A la Ronde’s many visitors during the run up to Christmas.

Tree planting to celebrate 50 years of the Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital

A tree-planting ceremony was held on Friday to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital.

Staff including Matron Paula Winter and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Keith Eyres joined with Colonel Paul Baldry, chairman of the Patient Focus Group at the Nuffield who led the planting. Colonel Baldry said “The hospital has now been here for 50 years, serving hundreds of thousands of patients and providing work for many local people and companies.”

Bioscience to battle ash dieback

The University of Exeter is a member of a consortium awarded £2.4 million by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) for urgent research into the ash dieback fungus and the genetics of resistance in ash trees.

Ash dieback (Chalara fraxinea) is a devastating fungus that threatens our third most common broadleaf tree (after oak and birch).

It’s official, I’ve got Christmas envy. Everywhere I go lights are twinkling and festive songs are ringing out. But, we have yet to put a single decoration up at home yet.

Now, everyone has a different opinion on when you should ‘deck the halls’ and get festive with it…but normally we will make our annual trip to a local farm, where they have mulled wine and reindeer to keep everyone happy, and pick out our Christmas tree in early December – I think if you’re splashing out on a Norwegian Fir tree you might as well get your money’s worth!

Woman killed by tree in Exeter was living in a tent

This was the scene of the tragic incident in which a woman was killed by a falling tree in Exeter during last night's storms.

Police were today carrying out an investigation and prepare a report for the coroner.

The 21-year-old victim died and two men, aged 27 and 35, were injured when the tree came down shortly before midnight.. There are no further details regarding injuries at this time.

The woman was treated at the scene but died later in hospital. The tragedy happened at around 11.50pm yesterday on Western Way, near to junction with Barnfield Road in the city...
