The RSPB is calling for everyone in the South West to join the wildlife-planting revolution after a YouGov survey revealed that three quarters (78%) of people are now doing at least something in their garden or outside space to help wildlife (with 23% trying a lot, 28% trying a fair amount, and 27% trying a little).

New customers allowed to join garden waste scheme

People in Exeter can sign up once again for the City Council’s Garden Waste Collection Scheme.

The Council had stopped new customers signing up for the scheme at the beginning of the Coronavirus outbreak. However it has now lifted the suspension and is taking on new customers.

Gardeners can choose either a 140 litre brown bin for £37.15 a year or a 240 litre bin for £48.80. Alternatively a bundle of five biodegradable sacks costs £11.

Things that can be put in the bin are:

Innovative free gardening app launched at Toby’s Garden Festival

A unique way to discover the gardening community around you has been launched by Candide, an innovative gardening community app, at Toby’s Garden Festival. Places is the brand new and unique functionality which allows you to locate your nearest gardening centre or public garden wherever you are in the South West. This regional launch comes ahead of a national roll out at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in June.

Plant Heritage Devon Group Plant Fair

Eleven independent plant nurseries selling a wide selection of plants grown in the south west. From old roses and primroses to grasses and shade lovers, there's a plant suitable for any garden situation and the nurseryman willing to provide growing instructions.

The 13 acre gardens developed over the last 40 years by Mary Benger are open until 6pm and refreshments, light lunches and cakes are available in the cafe.

What will you discover at Killerton BioBlitz?

On Saturday 7 May the National Trust’s Killerton estate will be asking for volunteers and visitors to come along and help search high and low for wildlife across its meadows, woodland and parkland. The team at Killerton need volunteers to help count everything they find and take part in the first BioBlitz to be held in the iconic parkland.

Everyone is welcome to take part, and whether you’re 6 or 60, every species found will help to create an important scientific record. The National Trust is hoping to record more than 200 species over a 12 hour period, looking out for birds, bats...

Garden Festival an exhibitor sell-out

A total of 150 exhibitors have snapped up the available space Toby Buckland’s Garden Festival at Powderham Castle, four months before the event, which takes place on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd May.

The annual two-day Garden Festival was launched last year by horticulturalist, nursery owner and TV presenter Toby Buckland, and was an immediate success, drawing around 8000 visitors, with several exhibitors having to restock several times during the event to keep up with demand.

Drugs in the environment affect plant growth

The drugs we release into the environment are likely to have a significant impact on plant growth, finds a new study led by the University of Exeter Medical School and Plymouth University.

By assessing the impacts of a range of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the research has shown that the growth of edible crops can be affected by these chemicals – even at the very low concentrations found in the environment.

Plants make workers happier

‘Green’ offices with plants make staff happier and more productive than ‘lean’ designs stripped of greenery, new research by academics in Exeter, Cardiff, Holland and Australia have revealed.

In the first field study of its kind, published today, researchers found enriching a ‘lean’ office with plants could increase productivity by 15%.
