Our concert on Thursday March 12th at 7.30 p.m. in Exeter Cathedral features one of Poulenc’s most celebrated works, “Gloria” followed by a journey into a world of dreams with Elgar’s “The Music Makers”.

The Exeter Philharmonic Choir conducted by Andrew Millington will be joined by The Sinfonietta.

We feature two contrasting works in this concert: Poulenc’s sense of fun and mischief shines through his setting of the Gloria. He said of the piece: “I had in mind those frescoes by Gozzoli where the angels stick out their tongues; and also some serious Benedictine monks I had once seen revelling in a game of football.”

We have engaged Sarah Power, soprano, who sang so beautifully in our performance of the Brahms Requiem last season.

The Music Makers is a more contemplative work, in which Elgar explores the role of the artist, combining quiet reflection with moments of enthusiasm and bursts of joy. It incorporates quotations from many of his best-known melodies, such as the Enigma theme, his violin concerto, his two symphonies and The Dream of Gerontius.
