Is it time to hire a declutterer?
There are just under 100 declutterers registered nationally with the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers UK (APDO-UK). It is a new profession with a rising profile thanks to the glut of TV programmes about hoarding. However such programmes give the impression that you need the services of a declutterer when you are digging tunnels between rooms. This is not the case. So many of us are time deficient and the homes we work for seem to be shrinking for a variety of reasons. Sometimes the shrinking space is deliberate with a choice to downsize, but often our homes are taken over by the creep of items being left by children who have left home, inherited items, old hobbies, interests, and work clutter.
Here are three reasons why most of us should consider a declutterer:
Gain more space - The average home can expand by 30% by clearing out unwanted and unused items. A declutterer can take items for charity or recycling and can give informed practical advice on where other items can be promptly rehomed.
Gain professional hands-on support - Most people have put off a clear out for years causing them to feel it is insurmountable. Many declutterers have a background in project management, and can plan and manage the task, but also roll up their sleeves and practically assist you in clearing.
Gain understanding - Sorting and clearing can be emotive, and mark an end of one chapter of your life and the start of another. A good declutterer will take time to listen to you to create what you want from your space and keep you motivated so that the effects are long lasting.
