A temporary one-way system has started today (5 January) on the access road to Exeter International Airport, to enable the next phase of improvements work to be carried out safely.

Work on the £1.4 million widening scheme on the B3184 is progressing well and the next stage requires a one way system, inbound towards the airport and Business Park, which will be in place until Friday 20 February.

For traffic looking to leave the area, a diversion route is signed via the B3184 to the A3052, before turning left for the A30 Eastbound (Honiton, Axminster and Dorchester) or right for A30 Westbound (Exeter and M5).

This temporary system means that all traffic coming away from Exeter Airport is re-routed on the diversion.

Traffic leaving the A3052 is being asked to find an alternative route to the B3184, where possible, in order to reduce congestion created by traffic passing in the opposite direction.

Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Economy and Growth, said: “This one way traffic management system is necessary on safety grounds to prevent the build up of traffic queuing on the A30 slip road. There may be some disruption but every effort is being made to limit inconvenience as much as we can. Where possible, if people can avoid travelling at peak times that would also help to reduce disruption.”

After 20 February, temporary two-way traffic lights will be back in place until the end of March.

The work is being carried out by contractor South West Highways (SWH Ltd) and is expected to be completed in the Spring.

Stagecoach South West are operating a special timetable on the 56 service while the one way system is in place.

Whilst journeys from Exeter to Exmouth will be unaffected, the journeys between Exmouth and Exeter will have to operate a diversion route, and a special timetable will be available with full details of the changes. Customers are advised to check their times of travel as some journeys, especially during the early morning, may leave earlier than the current timetable.

Customers travelling from Exmouth and Woodbury who wish to go to the airport will have to change onto an awaiting shuttle bus at the Greendale Business Park.

For the duration of the closure, not all of the normal services will be able to serve St David’s Station. Services 5A, 5B, 55B, H and X9 provide alternatives from Exeter Bus Station.

The special timetable is available online, at the bus stops and in print.
