A local youth choir is recruiting for new members as it gears up for the new term. Exeter Singing Roots is a vocal ensemble for young people aged 8 - 16, directed by professional singer and singing leader, Sarah Owen from Wren Music.

The choir meets on Thursdays in term-time at the St. Sidwell’s Centre, Exeter and is an opportunity to develop your musical skills, make new friends, enjoy using your voice as well taking part in performances.

A typical session involves fun and active warm-ups, learning an exciting range of ear-catching songs from around the world, practising useful singing techniques, as well as learning how to sing in harmony.

There's no need to read music (but you can if you like), and we learn by ear, which is fantastic for developing your aural skills and memory.

In the last term, Singing Roots have sung in impressive four-part harmony, learned a haunting ancient English folk song, performed a song from Northern India in tribal Gaddi language and written their own brand new song entirely from scratch, which they performed at Exeter Respect Festival.

Rehearsals are held weekly on Thursday afternoons from 24th September, 5.00 - 6.30pm in the Rougement Room at St Sidwells Centre, Sidwell Street, Exeter EX4 6NN. Please contact sarah@wrenmusic.co.uk if you'd like any more information.

The group is part of the Roots Music School programme run by Devon Folk and Education Charity, Wren Music, who also run a range of choirs and orchestras around the county for people of all ages. Wren works with thousands of people across Devon and beyond each year, in settings as diverse as the family centres, community projects, care homes, special schools, and youth clubs.
