South West economy sees strong end to 2016

The South West economy grew at one of the fastest rates in the UK during December, with business activity and the number of new orders rising sharply, according to the latest Lloyds Bank Regional PMI.

The South West PMI® rose to 58.7 in December, up from 56.6 in November. A PMI reading above 50 signifies growth in business activity.

Data for December also showed that employment rose for the sixth month running, supported by an increase in new business orders.

Exeter ranked top university in South West

The University of Exeter is the top university in the southwest according to The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017.

The university, which was The Times and The Sunday Times University of the Year for 2012-13, ranks 9= in this year’s league table. The Southwest region is well represented in the wider top 20 with Bath ranking 12th in the UK and Bristol 19th.

SW employers grow in confidence despite Brexit

The fourth quarter of 2016 has seen a boost of confidence in the South West with hiring intentions of +3%, according to Manpower, the world’s workforce experts. The Employment Outlook in the region has risen by two percentage points from last quarter. The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey is based on responses from 2,102 UK employers. It asks whether employers intend to hire additional workers or reduce the size of their workforce in the coming quarter. RECORD crowds attended the 39th Dartmoor Folk Festival, held in the foothills of Dartmoor at South Zeal, near Okehampton from August 5 to 7.

Local and national artists entertained those who went along to the event, most to sell-out audiences.

The festival included concerts, dances, a Dartmoor Fayre, a ceilidh, folk service, craft displays, music hall, pub sessions, a ramble on Dartmoor and music, song and dance workshops.

Tour of Britain launches in Devon

Devon school children received a very special preview of the Tour of Britain on Monday (4 July), cycling the start and finish of the Devon stage with a British cycling pioneer and an aspiring professional.
