In anticipation of opening up their exciting new foodie venture down on the city’s historic Quayside, Jim and Lucy Fisher of Exeter Cookery School have announced a series of enticing cookery days on Saturday 24th October, 14th November and 12th December.

Held in the swish, state-of-the-art kitchens at Sapphire Spaces in Topsham, where they hosted a buzzing pre-launch event, foodies will be able to relax, have fun and create some seasonal taste sensations during these intimate cookery days.

Building on the growing success of Powderham Food Festival, which first launched in 2012 and draws food-lovers from across the region, this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better than ever. The popular date in Devon’s culinary calendar has doubled its appeal for 2015, as it is due to take place over two days from 3rd to 4th October – perfect timing as it marks the end of British Food Fortnight.

Back by popular demand comes Powderham Food Festival’s dramatic Theatre of Fire 'n Smoke, where some of Britain’s best BBQ cooks will be demonstrating their cooking skills...

Taste sensations with Exeter Cookery School

Jim and Lucy Fisher, founders of Exeter Cookery School - due to launch later this year on Exeter’s historic quayside - were cooking up a storm at the pre-launch of their exciting new venture. Held at the swish showroom of Sapphire Spaces in Topsham, Jim and Lucy entertained the crowd of food lovers with a tantalising taste of what’s in store from this dynamic duo.

Jim entertained with a cookery demonstration, with help from members of the audience, and everyone enjoyed some tempting treats such as minted pea soup and duck confit with panko breadcrumbs, washed down with some pink...

Beware of lurking bbq bugs

As the school summer holidays get into full swing, a survey has found that the humble chicken is likely to be in high demand on barbecues in the South West. Bangers and burgers have lost out as 29% of people in the South West named chicken as their top pick .

Encouragingly, 29% of people in the South West said they take extra care when cooking chicken on the barbecue. However 22% said they never worry about it, despite the fact that over a quarter of a million people fall ill every year due to campylobacter, the bug most often carried on raw poultry.

Jamil sets his sights on British Curry Awards

Jamil Miah, founder of Denley's Essence of India in Topsham, is hoping to garner some all-important support from fans of the popular Indian restaurant for the chance of winning a prestigious British Curry Award later this year. Having been shortlisted four times already, since 2009, Jamil says he is excited about the possibility of coming away with a grand prize this year.

Jamil says: “With over 200,000 nominations received last year, every person’s vote counts, so we are asking all our loyal customers to help us in our goal of winning one of these esteemed awards.”

Schools celebrate life down on the farm

Seven Devon schools achieved well-earned recognition for their outstanding work with school meals and food education on Wednesday (15 April) as they received awards from the national school food programme, the Food for Life Partnership (FFLP).

Pupils, teachers, caterers and special guests enjoyed a gloriously sunny day at West Town Farm, Ide – a working organic farm near Exeter – and took part in various food-related activities.

Chilli beer brewed for Food Festival

Hunters Ales have brewed a special fiery beer for Powderham Food Festival.

Fire King, an amber beer, lightly hopped to allow the hot chilli flavours to zing out, complements the chargrilled flavours of barbecue food.

The bottles have been specially brewed by Hunters and will raise money for The C Group Royal Marines charity. A donation from each bottle sold will go to their fund, inspiring business to support marines in need.

Award-winning Hunters Ales have a reputation for superb and innovative brewing and Fire King is another winner.

Axminster's River Cottage is once again hosting a competition to find the next young cooking talent as Rising Star returns for 2014. The competition looks to find an inspirational character amongst the best of Britain’s young cooks. Exeter ‘Come Dine With Me’ star's fundraiser

Exeter-based PR Consultant Glen King, with clients across the South West, celebrated her TV debut on popular Channel 4 programme, ‘Come Dine with Me’ by hosting a special event to raise awareness for Exeter Foodbank.

Glen organised an evening for close friends and family at the luxurious kitchen showroom Sapphire Living Space located at Topsham which was sponsored by V-Zug. Guests were welcomed with wine and canapés and asked to donate tins and packets of food for the local worthy cause.
