From diving to mine warfare and nursing to media operations, the Royal Naval Reserve is offering potential recruits the chance to gain an insight into the valuable work of the Navy’s own volunteer force.

Plymouth’s reserve establishment, HMS Vivid, which has volunteers from across Devon and Cornwall, is holding a ‘Live’ event on Wednesday 12 November.

There will be opportunities to meet the local team and discuss the benefits of being a reservist, the wide range of activities on offer and a chance to see some of these specialist roles in action.

Asian elephant spotted at nature reserve…

On a sunny morning in early autumn, a group of Sri Lankan and Indian families were invited by Hikmat Devon to the Axe Estuary Wetlands.

Led by Tim Dafforn (Team Leader – People) and Meg Knowles (Education Ranger) from the East Devon District Council Countryside team, the tour started with a treasure trail, where each person collected items from nature – leaves, berries, flowers, even a bird feather.

From this exercise, the group discovered the rich colours and textures of autumn. Next stop was the bird hide, where everyone viewed different species of birds in the marshes...
