There are just over two weeks left to enter NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group’s ‘Picture Your Health’ photography and picture competition.
The theme of the competition is ‘healthy people, living healthy lives, in healthy communities’, so if you are doing something healthy with your family this Easter weekend, why not take a photograph showing what health in Devon means to you?
You can take a picture of anything from a family walk or bicycle ride in Devon’s countryside, to a day at the beach or a football match.
This evening I start my first session of insomnia treatment with Stephanie Romiszewski who is a Sleep Physiologist at the Sleepyhead Clinic in Exeter. I am both excited and nervous as I begin this journey into the unknown, a little sceptical, as nothing I have tried in the past has made the slightest bit of difference to aid my sleep, not even sleeping tablets and I have believed, for quite some time now, that I am beyond help.
First, let me tell you a bit about myself. I am 44, happily married, with a beautiful 8-year-old son who is my world. I...
It is essential the Government comes clean and announces its plans for those NHS areas in the worst financial trouble, including Devon, before the election. Otherwise, the public will quite rightly conclude Ministers are trying to “bury bad news” until after May 7th.
I have it on good authority that the NHS was expecting to announce “intervention and support” regimes for the most “financially distressed” NHS areas at the same time as the new “vanguard” integration pilots, which were unveiled this week. This didn’t happen.
At Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday, my Labour...
On Wednesday11 March, The British Heart Foundation’s No Smoking Day returns for its 32nd year.
The annual campaign inspires and helps smokers who want to quit. This year, over one million smokers are expected to use No Smoking Day to quit.
As well as supporting as many smokers as possible to take part and begin their smoke-free lives, our Public Health team has been working with Devon Partnership NHS Trust to provide support for people with mental health issues – who are particularly susceptible to the damaging effects of smoking.
Experts are today warning of the negative implications that can come from using insect repellents that do not contain at least 20% DEET, and are fearful that young travellers are not fully aware of the potential diseases rife in popular travel destinations.
A new survey has found that 78% of people do not research current diseases that they are at risk of catching in areas they are travelling to. Further results from the study show that 93% are opposed to using insect repellent with a concentration of at least 20%.
Many diseases that young travellers are prone to catching...
Specialists from the University of Exeter are working with Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club on a project to model what happens to the brain of a player when they are concussed in order to improve safety and manage the impact of injuries following head trauma.
The data gathered during the research and the resulting findings could have a huge impact on the prevention and management of injury across a wide range of fields. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the biggest cause of death and disability worldwide in young children and working age adults.
A new group which offers support and education for people who have ongoing health challenges is starting in Exeter this month. The group is facilitated by an accredited Chrysalis Effect Practitioner/RGN who assists people with chronic health conditions, and specialises in supporting people in recovery from CFS/ME.
Long term illness, ongoing stress or health conditions can be very isolating and frustrating for anyone who is experiencing them, and issues including chronic exhaustion, pain, reduced mobility, and anxiety can prove difficult to manage over time. We aim to provide an...
As admission to colleges and graduate schools becomes even more competitive, there is increasing importance placed on the essay as part of the admissions process. Most of the colleges and graduate schools have different requirements and publish these in their guidelines. However, there is a basic approach to admission essay writing that you should use.
Your essay should be original and unique and make a good impression on the selection committee. In addition, your essay should reflect your analytical skills and your ability to deal with different situations, whilst also giving...
The Alzheimer’s Society has announced the launch of a new dementia-focussed Doctoral Training Centre at the University of Exeter.
The centre will support eight PhD students to investigate the effect of dementia on the brain’s neural networks.
Nationally, the dementia research community is one sixth the size of the cancer research community and Alzheimer’s Society aims to attract new people to dementia research from a range of different academic and clinical backgrounds, bringing fresh ideas and talent to help expand the boundaries of dementia science.
The Exeter Dementia Action Alliance has now been established in Exeter with the aim to develop awareness of dementia and dementia support within businesses and other organisations across the city.
Over the next 10 years dementia will increase significantly from the existing 850,000 people nationwide currently with a diagnosis.
Community initiatives like these aspire to raise awareness across the city. Currently there are 26 alliances across the South West.
This work will be guided by needs based strategies which will involve the voices of those with dementia and...
