Police warning over telephone fraudsters

Devon and Cornwall Police has been investigating an increased number of telephone frauds involving unknown persons randomly calling members of the public on their home telephone numbers and convincing them to part with or transfer thousands of pounds in cash.

The criminals use a number of different stories to get the victim to give away their money. The most recent story involves a jewellery shop.

In December, a victim was persuaded to purchase a Rolex watch from a jeweller in the Torbay area. The victim attended the jeweller’s shop in person. They were being ‘controlled’...

Six members of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen have come together to respond in their own creative way to the plight of the bees and the inspirational example of the rooftop beehives on Princesshay shopping centre in Exeter.

Jewellery worth £5,000 stolen in burglary

Police in north Devon are appealing for information after £5,000 worth of jewellery was stolen during a burglary at an elderly woman’s South Molton home.

The woman in her 80s, discovered her house had been burgled after returning from a holiday visiting family in Australia.

More than 20 items (pictured), including a wedding ring and eternity ring, were taken from the house in North Road sometime between the early hours of Sunday 30 March and 7pm on Sunday 1 June.

It is believed the offender(s) entered the property by removing a glass panel on the locked front door....

Police appeal following Teignmouth burglary

Devon & Cornwall Police are appealing for information following a high-value burglary in Teignmouth.

The incident took place between Wednesday 15 January and Wednesday 29 January 2014 at a property on Second Avenue.

During the burglary, property worth a total of almost £7,000 was stolen. The haul included jewellery which was of sentimental value to the 65-year-old disabled victim.

A garden shed was also burnt to the ground.

The stolen property included:

Exeter City Police have warned that scammers who use shoddy jewellery to cheat people out of cash have arrived in the area.

The scam typically sees scammers flag down motorists by the side of the road beside supposedly broken down cars claiming to need cash for fuel.

Often jewellery is offered as security against for a loan of the money with claims that the value outweighs the money lent.

But in most cases the jewellery turns out to be worthless and sees the victims holding shoddy jewellery in place of their money.
