National Family Arts Festival: Monster Masks

RAMM has thousands of objects on display which, with a little imagination, could inspire a monster mask. How about a creepy clock, an evil elephant, a terrifying tiger or a scary spider?

Come and join in the Halloween fun and make your own mask to take away. Music will accompany the monster masks activity. There’s also an opportunity to see Ten Pieces, a short BBC film about how classical music can inspire creativity in children, in RAMM’s Garden Meeting Room.

Massive hoard of Roman coins unearthed

A massive hoard of almost 22,000 Roman coins has been unearthed near Seaton in East Devon.

East Devon builder and metal detector enthusiast Laurence Edgerton discovered the hoard of 4th-Century copper-alloy coins in November 2013 while operating under licence on Clinton Devon Estates land near Seaton Down. The findspot is near to the Honeyditches site which includes a Roman villa and a possible Roman fort.

Exeter’s award-winning museum, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum is today (Friday) launching a bid to purchase the coins for public display in the city.

Evening Lecture: Paradise Found

Award-winning artist and pupil of Robert Lenkiewicz, Nahem Shoa will explore the work of a number of artists in Detached and Timeless, including Bomberg, Lanyon, Heron and Clough. Exploring the different approaches used by them in conveying the landscape of the Southwest, he will build bridges between their paintings and other masters of the history of art. He will also discuss why, for British artists, the Southwest has been seen as a kind of paradise. Followed by Q&A session with Nahem and exhibition curator Martin Thomas.

From August to December 1914 Devon’s population witnessed the transformation from peacetime to wartime. The residents of Devon were encouraged to participate in the war effort which ranged from recruitment efforts to war charities.

Meet local bird experts from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

Discover underwater wonders around Devon’s shores, learn how bees are saving the UK millions of pounds a year, which piece of clothing inspired the RSPB’s origins and how everything from tigers to sparrows are being protected by local conservationists.

Reynolds Painting Saved for Devon

A successful fundraising auction by the Friends of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery has ensured that a portrait commemorating the friendship of two of Devon’s most famous artists has been saved for Devon.

With over £12,000 raised at the art auction last Wednesday and assistance from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund, the Portrait of the artist Francis Hayman (1708-1776) by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) can be added to Exeter’s art collection.

ACE Grant for Pacific Collections at RAMM

A new grant from the Designation Development Fund will allow RAMM to develop its Pacific collections for the benefit of its audiences including families, students and academics.

Called Discovering Worlds, the ambitious project encompasses new research, conservation, documentation and reinterpretation.
