Full planning approval secured for new Exeter site

Exeter City Council has granted approval on a Persimmon Homes South West scheme for 40 high-quality homes, on land adjacent to Blakeslee Drive in Newcourt. This follows the outline planning consent that had previously been granted in March for up to 50 new homes.

The 3.2-hectare site will feature family housing, comprising about a third of the area, with the remaining space dedicated to open areas.

To the south, the open space will extend an existing pond to support the new development, incorporating additional planting to enhance biodiversity. Existing quality trees,...

A major Exeter-based developer is working towards bringing new homes to the city.

Persimmon Homes South West secured outline planning consent for up to 50 high-quality homes, 35% of which will be designated for a local housing association, in line with Exeter City Council policy, on land adjacent to Blakeslee Drive in Newcourt.

The site is 3.2 hectares in size with family housing making up around a third of this while the remaining area will be provided as open space and surface water drainage.

To the south, the open space land will extend the existing basin to...

Go-ahead for city flats despite ‘overbearing’ claim

A new six-storey block of ‘co-living’ apartments will be built in the centre of Exeter despite claims that it will be ‘overbearing’ and will leave nearby homes in the shade.

The application for the new building at Summerland Street is one of two co-living developments passed by Exeter City Council’s planning committee this week.

As well as the plan for 145 bed spaces for young professionals and young people at the site between Western Way and Sidwell Street, the committee agreed to 34 more at the Mission Hall in Tudor Street.

The Summerland Street plan by...

East Devon homes thrown out for being 'too small'

By Alison Stephenson, local democracy reporter.

East Devon councillors have turned down a development scheme at Clyst Honiton because the homes are “too small” and it would encourage peope to drive.

Planners were not prepared to accept proposals 10 square metres below standards recommended in national planning guidelines despite approving houses of the same size earlier this year.

The plans for four commercial units and nine two-bed homes by Eagle One MMIII Ltd for land next to Old Tithebarn, Clyst Honiton were also rejected by East Devon District Council’s...

Heavitree Road student flats plans rejected

Councillors throw out student and co-living plans for old police station site

Major plans for student and co-living blocks at Exeter’s former Heavitree Road police station have been rejected.

The city council’s planning committee threw out the application on Monday [20 February] after criticism of what one councillor described as two “monolithic blocks” that would have been built opposite St Luke’s Campus.

The plans had been altered after members said they were ‘minded to refuse’ a previous version in October, with the total number of rooms cut by 80 to 955. Both...

Devon CPRE celebrates Marsh Green solar farm refusal

Devon CPRE, the Devon branch of the countryside charity, is celebrating after councillors in East Devon voted to refuse permission for a large solar farm on agricultural land at Marsh Green, near Exeter, following a two-hour debate just before Christmas.

The 6:4 decision (with one abstention) came as a welcome surprise to opponents of the scheme, including residents in and around Marsh Green. It followed a site visit by councillors on the morning of the planning meeting (20 December). They found the proposed construction area waterlogged after all the recent rain - a fact that...

King Billy student flats approved again

Plans to demolish an historic Exeter city centre pub and replace it with student flats have once again been given the go-ahead.

In October 2017, the scheme for The King Billy was granted approval by Exeter City Council’s planning committee, which in addition to the student flats, would also see a commercial unit and a restaurant/pub at street level.

However, in January 2021, as work on the redevelopment of the Longbrook Street site had not begun, the extant planning permission expired, forcing developers Rengen to go through the planning process again.

They had...
