More than 40 fencers competed in the 2015 Devon Foil Championships at Isca College in Exeter.

Grace Williams and Jason Shillingford claimed gold medals in the senior Women's and Men's categories, Alexis Jouan took the under-14s junior title and Edward Hall topped the under-11s age group.

Study examines websites' password practices

Global IT giants including Amazon and LinkedIn could be doing far more to raise awareness of the need for better password practices among their users.

Analysis by Professor Steve Furnell, Director of the Centre for Security, Communications and Network Research at Plymouth University, looked into the password security controls in place among ten of the world’s most visited websites.

It revealed very few of them give detailed guidance about the importance of providing secure passwords, either when users were creating or updating accounts.

RMT criticises Government over SW investment

Rail union RMT has pledged an all-out fight over rail investment in the South West after the Transport Secretary cast doubt on the scale of investment in the Plymouth region’s railways by admitting that just £40million has been promised – despite calls for a £7 billion package. RMT has branded the move a “complete and utter betrayal of the South West despite all the posturing and promises after the resilience of rail services was exposed in last year’s floods and storms.”

Big variation in mobile coverage in the SW

Which? has teamed up with independent mobile coverage experts OpenSignal to reveal the best and worst mobile phone networks for across the UK, and found that the South West was the second worst region we looked at for coverage and some providers were much better than others.

The analysis of the different networks in the South West found a variation of 40% between the top and bottom 3G provider:

  • Highest average time on 2G, 3G or 4G: Vodafone (94.4%)
  • Lowest average time on 2G, 3G or 4G: Three (91.8%)

The Big Issue across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset has received an early Christmas present of smart new tabards for its vendors, thanks to support from the Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise (PDSE).

PDSE and the Big Issue have a long standing relationship. The main mission of PDSE is to increase oral health awareness and address oral care inequalities for members of the community who are disadvantaged or at risk.

Boost for Devon rail commuters

Rail Minister Claire Perry has welcomed the first major redesign of First Great Western’s mainline timetable in Devon and Cornwall for seven years by waving off the first new 0706 retimed service.

The changes launched yesterday (15 December) see an improved service for the South West, providing an earlier morning direct service from London to Plymouth and Cornwall and shaving over 30 minutes off the current quickest journey time.

Key improvements include:

Chiefs prop Brown joins Albion on loan

Exeter Chiefs prop Alex Brown will go straight into the Plymouth Albion squad ahead of their Championship trip to Leeds on Friday night.

Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter today confirmed the 25-year-old forward has teamed up with Albion after the two clubs agreed a loan deal for the player.

It will be Brown’s second spell on loan at the Brickfields having previously featured for the club during the 2012/13 season when Nat Saumi was in charge.

Campaigners have launched a high-stakes bid to secure the future of Devon's Dartmoor Zoo, immortalised in the Hollywood Movie “We Bought a Zoo” starring Matt Damon.

Warning of delays on A38 Plymouth to Exeter

Police are currently dealing with three separate collisions on the A38 Plymouth to Exeter road.

A woman was treated at the scene following a single vehicle collision on the Exeter bound A38 near Rattery. The collision took place at 11.20am and police, ambulance crews and the fire service attended scene. She was taken to Derriford Hospital with a shoulder injury.

Both sides of the carriageway are closed while the air ambulance lands.

Police focus on young and emerging drivers

In November Devon and Cornwall Police is focusing its roads policing efforts on young and emerging drivers. Road collisions impact significantly on people’s lives and it is stark truth that they remain the leading cause of death for young adults aged between 15 and 24, accounting for over a quarter of deaths in the 15 to 19 age group. This month police are concentrating on this group to improve attitudes to driving and risk taking. The primary factors for fatal collisions are speed, drink or drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, driver distraction and careless or inconsiderate driving....
