Lasting symbol of Remembrance carved for Exeter Cathedral

A new carving of a poppy has been completed at Exeter Cathedral in time for Remembrance Sunday. The decorated “corbel” stone will eventually be added high up on the eastern end of the Cathedral as part of a major programme of works in that area of the building that was funded by the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund. It was carved from a block of Salcombe stone by Gary Morley who has been a member of the Cathedral’s team of masons for over 25 years. The launch of the 2015 Poppy Appeal in Devon (coinciding with the arrival of the Royal British Legion’s Field of Remembrance on Cathedral Green) has marked the beginning of Exeter Cathedral's preparations for the coming season when we remember those close to us who have died.

This is a free exhibition of information and items relating to the First World War, contributed by members of the Heavitree community, including personal stories from families who were directly affected.

Theatre group seeks WW1 families

A theatre group in Devon is calling on local families to try and trace living relatives of soldiers who died in the First World War.

Six names are inscribed on Silverton’s war memorial and the Mid Devon village’s dramatic group are focusing on them for their next production.

This will be performed in February 2014 to mark the centenary of The Great War.

Silverton's Drama Group, The Luvvies, has been busy researching what village life was like during World War One as the basis to their play, which will be performed in the village’s Community Hall.
