Racing at Exeter on New Year’s Day is a long-established Devon tradition. It’s when sore heads from the previous nights celebrations are banished and the excitement of horses and jockeys galloping around the track are enjoyed.

A crowd of more than 3,000 turned out at Exeter Racecourse yesterday to watch ponies from Dartmoor and Clydesdale horses stretch their limbs in their two furlong races before seven jump races gave racegoers an afternoon to remember.

Six hill ponies went to post and it was a tiny pure bred registered Dartmoor who crossed the line in front with his owner Rachael Watson on board.

“My plan was to stay close to Frolic in the race and keep something in the tank for the finish,” said 20-year-old Rachael who farms with her parents near Poundsgate.

Little and large under orders on Devon Day

It will be a case of little and large at Exeter Racecourse on Devon Day, November 23 when feathers will be flying and tiny hooves dashing. A plethora of future jump racing stars are set to line up at Exeter Racecourse today (Tuesday 22 October) when the course stages its annual Best Mate Novice Chase Day.

That particular race is named after the legendary racehorse Best Mate who began his glittering career over fences at Exeter in 2000. He went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times and amass over £1 million in prize money.

Clydesdales to hit the racetrack at Exeter

A race with a difference will take place at Exeter Racecourse on Sunday 24 November when half a dozen or so Clydesdales will be thundering down the home straight with professional jockeys on board.

They belong to Tim Ancrum of Adventure Clydesdales which specializes in providing riding holidays across Dartmoor.

Tommy Trotter, Ha Durran Ben, Allen and Cyril are among the horses which will be put through their paces with jockeys’ wearing their full racing regalia on board before the first race as part of the racecourse’s celebration of all that is good about Devon.
