£2m research study is a global first for lung condition

The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been successful in its application for £2m of funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to carry out research into respiratory disease, aiming to shed light on a health condition that adversely affects the lungs.

One of the world’s first Omicron-specific variant vaccines is to be trialled in Devon and Cornwall, as the biotechnology company Moderna, Inc works with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The innovative study will see participants receive a first or second booster. Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E) have received the go-ahead from NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSEI) to continue working on plans to formally join together.

In November 2020, both Boards approved a ‘Strategic Case’ which sets out how the Trusts propose to become a single integrated organisation and submitted it to NHSEI for review. Loud cheers went up around the Devon Air Ambulance airbase at Exeter airport last Thursday, as their new Airbus H145 helicopter flew down the runway and settled onto the helipad – it was the first time this new generation aircraft had landed in Devon.

Steroid cuts death risk in some hospitalised patients with COVID-19

A cheap and readily available steroid which was part of a nationwide COVID-19 trial that included patients in Exeter has been found to reduce the risk of dying in patients admitted to hospital with the virus.

The University of Exeter and the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E) were collectively among 175 NHS hospitals signed up to the RECOVERY trial, coordinated nationally by Oxford University and delivered by the National Institute for Health Research, Clinical Research Network.

Exeter Rotary Clubs raise £5,070 for hospital appeal

The three Rotary Clubs in Exeter and Topsham have proved that 'we're all in this together', by donating an amazing £5,070 to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital's “HelpUsHelpYou” Appeal.

The money will go directly towards providing extra support and essential items for the wonderful key NHS staff.

Exeter Southernhay Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Exeter initially gave a donation of £1,900 to the Appeal.
