MENTORING someone who is going through a difficult time in their life can be challenging but rewarding, according to the coordinator of an Exeter charity project.

Laura Callaway at Transitions, a project of Exeter Community Initiatives, is looking for volunteers who feel they have skills to offer people who have been homeless, faced mental illness or experienced addiction.

The Transitions Project is recruiting volunteers to act as mentors to people who are making changes in their lives, to improve their wellbeing and independence. Our clients may have been homeless, experienced mental health problems or addictions, or other difficult life experiences. Mentoring support can help clients manage change, set goals, improve their confidence and skills. Training and support is provided, the course consists of six Friday mornings starting 31 Jan. MP supports guide dog owner

Neil Parish, MP for Mid Devon has met with Uffculme resident and guide dog owner, Tilly Trotter, to discuss the recent incident that resulted in her guide dog, Gwyn, having to retire.

Tilly, who is registered blind, relied on Gwyn, a three year old German Shepherd Dog, to guide her.

Tilly and Gwyn were walking in Uffculme when a pet dog attacked Gwyn and as a result of the physical and psychological injuries sustained Gwyn is no longer able to work as a guide dog.

Funding boost for NEET Families

The families of some of Exeter’s young NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) are to benefit from over £24,000 sponsorship provided by the Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT), a specialist awarding body offering vocational qualifications.

£14.2m funding to nurture next generation of arts and humanities researchers

The South, West and Wales Consortium, in which the University of Exeter is joined with seven other universities – Aberystwyth, Bath, Bath Spa, Bristol, Cardiff, Reading and Southampton – has been awarded £14.2 million funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) over the next five years to deliver postgraduate supervision, training and skills development from 2014.

The consortium is one of 11 new Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) and seven Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) to have been awarded a total of £164m funding from the AHRC.
