Commemorating the outbreak of the First World War with works by Walter Bayes and Muirhead Bone, RAMM’s portrait collection will also be represented by two naval heroes of the Napoleonic era with Devon connections - Admiral Edward Pellew and Captain Charles Proby. Pellew rose to become commander of the Mediterranean fleet and a national celebrity after the Bombardment of Algiers whilst Proby also gave outstanding service in the seven years war and the American war of independence.

First World War memorial website launches

An online memorial to the fallen men of the Clinton Devon Estates communities has been launched.

The website, www.devonremembers.co.uk was created from information gathered by volunteers from across the Estate's towns and villages.

The event was attended by key people from the Estate, local media and the volunteers and historians that tirelessly researched and compiled the stories of those who fell during the war.

People are invited to add their own stories and photographs on the site, or by emailing mail@devonremembers.co.uk .

Research key to tackling drug resistance

Research at the University of Exeter Medical School is part of an unprecedented cross council collaboration to tackle the rising threat of antibiotic resistance.

For the first time, all seven UK research councils have come together to co-ordinate the work of environmental scientists, medical researchers, biologists, engineers, vets, economists, social scientists, mathematicians and even designers, in a targeted effort to address the issue of drug resistant bacteria.

An emotional end to D-Day trip

Exeter businessman Chris Wollacott and his friend Steve Robertson are cycling to the five D Day beaches in Normandy, France to remember the brave soldiers who fought in 1944.

Steve's father (from London, pictured) was one of the servicemen and lied about his age 18 (he was 17 years old) to be able to sign up.

Chris's Dad Cyril Wollacott (from Crediton) is 88 on the 9th June 14, he was 18 years old all but 3 days by the skin of his teeth. He missed the D Day landings because but was part of the India & Burma soldiers.

Chiefs launch search for WW1 players

Exeter Rugby Club are hoping that Chiefs supporters and the local community can help them in their quest to find out more about the brave former players who gave their lives during World War One.

Regular visitors to the Devon venue will know that a special memorial plaque is already located within the County Suite to commemorate former Exeter Rugby players who paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. In recognition of the World War One centenary, Exeter University Choral Society is performing Karl Jenkins’ highly acclaimed work; ‘The Armed Man’ in the atmospheric Cathedral. Dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo Crisis, Jenkins intended this piece to have an anti-war stance. Jenkins acheives this through the use of diverse cross-cultural styles of music, including the Catholic Mass, a fifteenth century folk song entitled ‘L’Homme armé’ and a Muezzin soloist. Theatre group seeks WW1 families

A theatre group in Devon is calling on local families to try and trace living relatives of soldiers who died in the First World War.

Six names are inscribed on Silverton’s war memorial and the Mid Devon village’s dramatic group are focusing on them for their next production.

This will be performed in February 2014 to mark the centenary of The Great War.

Silverton's Drama Group, The Luvvies, has been busy researching what village life was like during World War One as the basis to their play, which will be performed in the village’s Community Hall.

A war time effort at Killerton

A new exhibition has opened which features details of Broadclyst Primary School’s show stopping performance of 'Keep Calm and Carry On’ at Killerton House in June.

The entertaining promenade performance was developed by the schoolchildren in conjunction with Killerton staff and volunteers and gave the audience a rare chance to see World War II history brought to life in an innovative way. The performances were recorded on video and are now presented alongside displays of photographs, costumes and objects from the play.
