Generous Devon shoppers thanked for food donations

Tesco shoppers in Devon have been given a big thank-you after providing nearly 30,000 meals to support local food banks and frontline charities.

The 29,966 collected across the county between June 30 and July 2 was part of a total of 1.3 million meals donated by generous Tesco shoppers across the UK in large stores, with an additional 20 percent top-up added by Tesco.

A Devon health and wellbeing charity is seeking ‘chatty’ volunteers to come on board once a week to provide friendly conversation, information and support to local people on the number 57 bus between Exmouth and Exeter. The Chatty Bus, organised by Westbank Community Health and Care, relaunched on Thursday, 28th July as part of an initiative to reduce loneliness and social isolation.

Talented twins whose music is championed by Coldplay have graduated from the same course, at the same university, on the same day.

Theo and Bertie Pedrick decided to study together at the University of Exeter so they could pursue their music career.

Coldplay drummer Will Champion has acted as mentor for Bertie, the guitarist and singer, and Theo, the lead singer in their band PEDRICK. Mr Champion met with them after hearing their music, has kept in touch and even let Theo and Bertie record in Coldplay’s studio.

Trading Standards to 'test' more petrol pumps for accuracy this summer

Trading Standards will increase the number of routine petrol forecourt checks across Devon, Plymouth, Somerset, and Torbay this summer.

Usually around a dozen forecourts a year are tested – this summer up to an extra 20 will be tested, with a possibility of more if needed.

Fuel pumps are regularly tested by Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service to ensure that the pumps are legal.

The checks test if the amount of fuel a pump is showing the motorist is being dispensed is actually going into the vehicle.

Trading Standards seized illegal tobacco estimated to be worth more than £200,000 in raids in Devon and Somerset on Friday (22 July).

The raids were conducted by officers from the Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service and supported by Avon & Somerset Police, Devon and Cornwall Police, and HM Revenue and Customs.

Potentially life-saving defibrillators have been installed at 60 Hendy Group sites across the south and south west, including those in Devon, as the automotive group puts the health and well-being of colleagues and customers as a top priority.
