A concert that explores the varied roles of the piano in performance. Our programme features the piano as the extravagant soloist and the submissive accompanist, heard live in the room, through a distorted cassette recorder and through a humble teapot. The piano will also tell the story of our concert venue as a living electrical organism in a fascinating exploration of the hidden sounds around us.
Featuring new music by Emma Welton and Nicholas Peters alongside old(er) music by Alvin Lucier and Gerald Barry.
Performed by Alex Wilson (piano), with support from Emma Welton (...
PAUL METSERS is a top rated New Zealand singer/songwriter who moved to the UK in the 1980s and toured extensively.
He quickly became a firm favourite at Folk Clubs and Festivals, helped by his song "Farewell to the Gold" being taken up by Nic Jones, who recorded it on his CD "Penguin's Eggs". Paul stopped touring, apart from the occassional concert, in the 1990s. He is accompanied at this concert by Joe While on Piano. We welcome him to our concert for what should be a memorable evening.
The support act is Amanda Diamond & Eddy Richards . Amanda is a great singer, and...
A unique opportunity to hear Mike Oldfield’s classic 1973 instrumental album ‘Tubular Bells’ live when stripped bare of its glockenspiels, organs and ‘two slightly distorted guitars’ then faithfully re-constructed as a solo piano piece.
From the haunting introductory motif of Part One right through to the concluding Sailor’s Hornpipe of Part Two, Dave Sanderson performs his own piano version of Oldfield’s groundbreaking prog-rock epic live; journeying from one melody, riff and texture to the next with only his two hands, one instrument and no pre-recorded loops or backing tracks...
Paul Lewis born on 20th May 1972 is an English classical painist and will play Beethoven’s last three sonatas at St Peter’s Church, Budleigh Salterton on Saturday, 3rd October from 7.30pm. These are widely considered to be three of the most sublime, brilliant and audacious of his works for piano.
Paul’s father worked at the Liverpool docks and his mother was a local council worker; there were no musicians in the family background.
He is married to Bjorg Vaernes, the Norwegian cellist of the Vertavo Quartet. (“I played the cello as a young boy, really badly, and that was my...

We welcome clarinettist Charlie Sheppard-Vine all the way from Glasgow.
Alex Wilson will play some of Howard Skempton's lucid piano music.
We'll also perform James Saunders' revelatory music with its different textures of quietness, create 'Artificial...
