The number of people using a bicycle for work or leisure in England has rocketed since the lockdown began on 23 March, according to figures released by the Department for Transport.

The data reveals that daily bicycle use rose by an average of 50% on working days during lockdown, while the number of weekend and bank holiday bike riders shot up by 136% over the same period.

Latest section of E4 walking and cycling route opens in Exeter

The latest section of one of Devon County Council’s main cross-city walking and cycling routes has been completed.

The stretch of the E4 route from Pinhoe Road to Exhibition Way is now open, connecting it to the first phase of the route on Cumberland Way and onto Redhayes Bridge over the M5 to connect with the east of Exeter.

Exeter needs more space for walking and cycling, not cars.

We need a Green Recovery from the covid-19 crisis, including massive investment in walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure. The government’s decision to spend £27 billion on new road building is now clearly out of date - social distancing measures mean that we need more space for people to walk and cycle safely. Measures to support cyclists social distancing in place

New temporary traffic calming measures to support social distancing and provide a safer environment to encourage walking and cycling in Exeter are now in place. The changes are the first set of traffic calming measures along the E3 cycle route linking Heavitree and Whipton to the City Centre. The route also passes close to four primary schools, a secondary school as well as local parks.

Walking and cycling schemes in Devon have received a half-million pound boost, thanks to a funding announcement today (Friday 7 February).

The £500,000 grant from the Department for Transport will extend Devon County Council’s Access Fund Programme for a fourth year.

The programme aims to increase the proportion of walking and cycling trips to workplaces, schools or colleges in Exeter, Barnstaple and Newton Abbot. Exeter has been declared the second best city for cyclists, a new study has revealed.

Exeter scored good points for good air quality, cycling and walking statistics according to the survey by law firm True Solicitors.

An exciting new event comes to Devon for the first time later this year when Hospiscare hosts Wild Tri, and its big brother, Wild Tri Extreme.

This year’s ‘thrilling’ Devon Stage of the Tour of Britain was one by Commonwealth Games time trial champion Cameron Meyer.

Meyer took victory in Stage Two of the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain after sprinting to win in Barnstaple.
